How to Take a Good Face Photo

For the most accurate facial analysis, follow these photography tips. Good lighting and proper positioning are essential for reading facial complexion and features.

1
Use Natural Daylight
Stand facing a window with indirect natural light. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, fluorescent lighting, or colored light that distorts skin tone.
2
Remove All Makeup
Foundation, concealer, and lipstick mask your natural complexion and lip color. Cleanse your face before taking the photo.
3
Face the Camera Directly
Hold your phone at eye level and look straight into the lens. Avoid tilting your head up, down, or to the side.
4
Remove Glasses & Accessories
Take off eyeglasses, sunglasses, and heavy jewelry that might obscure facial features or cast shadows on your skin.
5
Neutral Expression
Keep a relaxed, neutral face without smiling or frowning. This allows accurate reading of facial lines and skin condition.
6
Pull Hair Back
Tie back hair to expose your forehead, temples, and ears. The forehead area is important for Heart diagnosis.
7
Use a Plain Background
Stand against a plain, light-colored wall. Patterned or dark backgrounds can create reflections and shadows on the face.
8
Wait After Exercise
Wait at least 30 minutes after exercise, eating spicy food, or drinking alcohol, as these temporarily change facial color.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is TCM face diagnosis and how does it work?
TCM face diagnosis (Mian Zhen) is a traditional diagnostic method that reads facial features — complexion, color, moisture, and specific zones — to assess the health of internal organs. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the face is considered a map of the body's internal organs: the forehead reflects the Heart, the area between the eyebrows reflects the Liver, the nose reflects the Spleen, the cheeks reflect the Lungs, and the chin reflects the Kidneys. Our tool translates these traditional principles into an accessible self-assessment.
Is the AI face diagnosis accurate?
This tool provides an educational assessment based on traditional Chinese medicine facial diagnosis principles. It is not a medical diagnosis and should not replace consultation with a qualified TCM practitioner. A professional TCM diagnosis also includes tongue diagnosis, pulse taking, and a detailed health history. Our tool is designed to give you a starting point for self-awareness and wellness exploration, not a definitive medical assessment.
Does my photo get uploaded to a server?
No. Your photo is processed entirely in your browser using the Canvas API. The image never leaves your device unless you have explicitly configured a custom API endpoint. In demo mode (the default), all analysis is done locally through the guided self-assessment questionnaire. You can optionally save your results — including a compressed thumbnail of your photo — to your browser's local storage, which remains on your device only.
How often should I use the face diagnosis tool?
You can use this tool as often as you like. Many users find it helpful to check monthly or seasonally, as facial appearance can change with diet, lifestyle, seasons, and overall health. Tracking your results over time in the saved history can help you notice patterns and see how your wellness practices are affecting your facial indicators. For significant changes, always consult a qualified healthcare provider.
