What Is TCM Herbal Tea?
Herbal tea therapy, known in Chinese as 茶疗 (cháliáo) — "tea healing" — is the practice of brewing specific herbs in hot water to extract their medicinal compounds and deliver them in an easily absorbed, gentle form. In TCM, tea is considered the ideal vehicle for herbal medicine: hot water extracts the active constituents, the liquid form is rapidly absorbed, and the warming nature of the brew supports the Spleen and Stomach in their digestive function. Unlike concentrated herbal decoctions prescribed in clinics, therapeutic teas are mild enough for daily home use.
The herbs used in this library are accessible and affordable. Most can be found at ordinary supermarkets in the tea, spice, or international aisles — ginger, chamomile, and barley are everywhere. Slightly more specialized herbs like chrysanthemum flowers, dried goji berries, rose buds, and jujube red dates are widely available at Asian grocery stores and online retailers including Amazon and iHerb. You do not need a prescription, a TCM pharmacy, or expensive equipment. A teapot, a strainer, and good-quality water are all you need.
How to brew TCM herbal tea: The standard method is simple. Place 5–15 grams of dried herb (about 1–3 tablespoons) into a teapot or mug. Pour freshly boiled water over the herbs, cover, and steep for 5–10 minutes. Most herbs can be re-steeped 2–3 times. For harder materials like dried roots or seeds (ginseng, sour date seeds), a longer simmer of 10–15 minutes in a small pot extracts more of the active compounds. Drink warm, ideally between meals or before bed, and never gulp cold herbal tea — TCM considers cold beverages harmful to the Spleen.
This library contains 18 herbal tea guides organized into four sections: single-herb teas that focus on one plant's properties, sleep and calm blends for the nervous system, digestive teas for stomach and gut, and specialty teas for specific concerns like circulation and immunity. Always read the safety guide before starting any new herbal tea, especially if you take medication or are pregnant.
