What Is Qigong?

Qigong (ζ°”εŠŸ, pronounced "chee-gong") is a centuries-old Chinese practice that combines gentle physical movements, breath control, and mental focus to cultivate and balance the body's Qi (vital energy). The word itself reveals its essence: ζ°” (qi) means "energy" or "breath," and 功 (gong) means "skill" or "cultivation through practice." Together they mean "the skill of working with your life energy." With roots stretching back over 4,000 years, qigong is one of the oldest health practices in the world β€” and today it is practiced by tens of millions of people globally, supported by a growing body of scientific research.

Qigong is built on the Three Regulations (δΈ‰θ°ƒ, san tiao), the foundational principles that distinguish it from ordinary exercise. The first is regulating the body (tiao shen) β€” adjusting posture, relaxation, and movement so the body is stable, balanced, and free of tension. The second is regulating the breath (tiao xi) β€” using slow, deep, abdominal breathing that calms the nervous system and drives the flow of Qi. The third is regulating the mind (tiao xin) β€” focusing attention inward, quieting scattered thoughts, and leading the Qi with intention. When all three are unified, the practitioner enters a state of relaxed, alert stillness that TCM calls "meditation in motion."

The benefits of regular qigong practice are wide-ranging and well-documented. Clinical studies have shown qigong to reduce stress hormones, lower blood pressure, improve sleep quality, enhance immune function, reduce chronic pain, and improve balance in older adults. Unlike intense workouts, qigong is gentle on the joints, can be practiced at any age and fitness level, and leaves you feeling energized rather than depleted. A 10-minute daily routine is enough to begin experiencing benefits.

This library contains 10 qigong and movement guides organized into three sections: complete routines you can learn and practice for life (Eight Brocades, Five Animal qigong, and tai chi basics), condition-specific routines targeting sleep, stress, digestion, and immunity, and breathing and meditation fundamentals. Start with the Eight Brocades β€” it is the most accessible and widely practiced routine in the world.
